Freedom from intrusive thoughts, time consuming and interfering compulsive behaviors, and phobias under the guidance of an experienced ERP therapist
CERP, or Exposure and Response Prevention, is about gradually getting comfortable with your fears or OCD triggers.
For example, you struggle with contamination OCD. You feel intense anxiety or disgust when touching things you perceive as "contaminated" — like door handles, other people, or pets. Your immediate urge is to wash your hands to reduce this anxiety.
In ERP therapy for OCD, you would work with a trained professional to face your fear one step at a time. The goal is to learn that these “contaminated” objects aren't actually dangerous, and that you can handle the anxiety without resorting to behaviors that interfere with your quality of life, such as excessive hand-washing or avoidance.
In your life outside the therapy room, this translates into less intense worries about contamination and less frequent urges to wash your hands and an increase in the amount of freedom you feel to do and be who you want to be. Eventually, the goal is to reduce intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors so much that you feel largely at peace.
ERP is an incredible treatment for intrusive thoughts and OCD. But it’s not for everyone. Here’s how to know if it’s for you:
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment approach.
